June Morning Market Meeting at Union Square Café NYC..........

A few weeks ago friends and I joined about 30 other people for a
Morning Market Meeting at Union Square Café.
The morning begins at 8:00AM with coffee, juice, pastries and
a welcome from Danny Meyer, USC founder.
His welcome includes news about Union Square Hospitality Group,
his umbrella for six restaurants and a catering operation.
Next he takes questions from his guests.
Then he introduces the guest speaker,
a farmer or artisan from the Union Square Green Market.
This morning we met Rick Bishop from Sullivan County’s Mountain Sweet Berry Farm.
He produces a large variety of fruits and vegetables.
His heritage breeds include
Tri-Star strawberries, arugula/rocket, squash blossoms, spigarello, sucrine and fino basil –
all grown in soil naturally ‘built’ to coax the most flavor out of each...
His talk and Q and A were really interesting.
Did not know you could use Google Earth to find wild ramps....
Next Chef Carmine joins us for a cooking demo.
Today Spicy Grilled Shrimp and Sucrine Salad,
Potato Leek Soup, Strawberry Macaroons and a glass of Riesling....
Nice…..
Than off for a tour of the Green Market with Chef Carmine……

The Market where he is well know.....
USC was a pioneer and early on promoter of USGM....
Many credit Danny Meyer with its transformation and  its continued success….
This is also true of Madison Square Park where USHG four star 11 Madison is located…
Both parks are former “needle parks”…
Smart……
Better neighborhood…
Better customers…

A Taste of Hell.......

For some time I have been trying to take a food focused walking tour in Hell’s Kitchen NYC with Rum and Blackbird.
Well I had the day off, they were running a tour and the weather was perfect.
It was a great tour not only because of the tastings but our guide made stops outside many restaurants and reviewed their menus.
Our first stop.......
We were served a corn flour traditional Colombian style ground beef empanada.
The corn crust is crunchy unlike the traditional wheat.
The menu is eclectic.
They serve a Hawaiian empanada with pieces of ham with sautéed pineapples and mozzarella cheese, Tuna Jalapeno -albacore tuna with jalapenos, Viagra - mama's seafood stew with shrimps, scallops, and crab meat.
The Avocado Salad- avocado, cucumber, tomato, romaine and iceberg lettuces, cilantro and scallions, with either cumin dressing or a mustard vinaigrette looked wonderful as did the Arroz con Camarones a la Colombiana- Colombian style shrimps mixed with sofrito sauce, seasoned yellow rice, peas, onions and carrots.
The owners are Greek and they are open 24 hours.
They also have a late night happy hour.
Next stop......
A favorite of our guide....
They open at 5:00

Across the street is a building from that fronts on 9th Avenue,
is “L” shaped and also fronts on 52nd Street.
Note the cast iron and Queen Anne details.
It was constructed in 1868, and yes it is a paint store.
A vestige of the past and a true surprise....
For a black and white milk shakes……
We stopped outside…..
They serve diner food………
The menus are records…..
Another walk by......
This park plaza was once the home of the third Madison Square Garden.
It is now a lovely plaza with two restaurants and an office building at each end.
It is also the home of New World Stage, a cluster of five small theaters.
